when i was a child, the first week of the calendar year was filled with “this is the first time i do ____ in *insert year*” i loved it! i thought it was so fun to document what i did - especially for the first time. years later, i’ve come to realize that time is but a concept & we are always doing something for the first time. the “time” that exists is truly just right now. every moment past was a moment of “now” & the concept of future is something that is fading more & more for me.
in this nervous system nourishment session, we explored 3 breathing exercises to help us be in the now. if a whole video is not something you have “time” for, i broke it down for you below:
began with a natural breathing cycle. no need to force or pressure here. simply allow your body to inhale and exhale calmly.
exercise #1 - inhale deeply through your nose. pause gently halfway through your exhale. find a moment of stillness before starting again.
exercise #2 - inhale deeply through your nose. as you exhale, pause at the one-third mark of your exhale. exhale again at the two-thirds mark, & then fully release your breath. find a pause before restarting.
exercise #3 - inhale deeply through your nose. as you exhale, pause at each quarter of your breath. continue this pattern until you fully release. find a moment between the last exhale & inhaling once again.
give yourself a moment to return back to your natural breathing rhythm before continuing on with your day.
some tips:
always inhale through your nose. depending on what your goal is, you’ll want to 1. exhale through your nose - for mental stimulation or 2. exhale through your mouth - for bodily relaxation or a combination.
you can practice 1 or all 3 together - it’s really up to you. not sure where to start? ask your body for some insight. you’d be surprised what it tells you.
